Thought for the month

This year has been one of great uncertainty and anxiety for countless people around the world.
Many whose lives are normally calm and predictable have faced uncertainty from aberrant natural disasters. Or sudden terrorist attacks. Or economic reverses such as the unexpected loss of employment. Here in France, a good many UK citizens are experiencing varying degrees of Brexit-related uncertainty – unimaginable a year or two ago.
For some, insecurity must now seem a permanent way of life – families unable to escape conflict zones, refugees in overcrowded transit camps, human rights activists imprisoned without trial and citizens of countries with unstable governments.
Many people, including in our community here at St Michael’s, have experienced this year the bereavement of family members or close friends taken from us unexpectedly. These remind us of the uncertainty of good health and even of life itself.
A central Christmas message is that these earthly challenges can be understood and faced with awareness that there are greater realities – that God is ultimately in control, and that our calling is to honour Him and live in His kingdom.
In this season we can be reassured by the certainties proclaimed by the prophet Isaiah:
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders … Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever.”
